The Beavers' 5-1 victory this weekend was the 500th win for the Bemidji State University (BSU) men’s hockey team in the John Glas Fieldhouse. This is the last season the Glas will be used for hockey, and is the 43rd season it’s been used.

The No. 6 BSU Beavers took the ice Friday night to take on conference rival, the Robert Morris Colonials.
The Beavers got a lot of help from junior forward Ian Lowe and freshmen forward Jordan George, who each scored two goals.

George opened the scoring for the Beavers just 1:24 minutes into the game, when he netted his 10th goal of the season on a power play.  Lowe and junior forward Ryan Cramer assisted the goal, and the Beavers jumped to an early lead.

Lowe got his first goal just under 14 minutes into the period, lighting the lamp for the 13th time this season.  George and sophomore defenseman Brad Hunt received the assists. It was Hunt’s 19th of the season.

George began the second period much like the first, scoring 34 seconds in to make the score 3-0.  Lowe and junior forward Matt Read got the assists.

The Colonials responded eight minutes later, when James Lyle beat Beaver sophomore goaltender Dan Bakala from the right face-off circle. That was all the Colonials could get on Bakala for the rest of the game.

Senior forward Tyler Lehrke got the Beaver scoring back in motion five minutes later, when he knocked a rebound from senior forward Chris McKelvie into the back of the net.

Lowe added his second goal of the game, an empty netter, to ice the game 5-1.

The victory marked the 500th win for Beaver men’s hockey in the John Glas Fieldhouse, which will be traded in for the Bemidji Regional Event Center (BREC) next season.

Saturday night was senior night.  The team honored four seniors: defensemen Chris Peluso; defensemen Kyle Hardwick; forward Zach Lehrke; and forward Chris McKelvie.

Not only was it senior night, but it was a chance for the Beavers to clinch the league championship.  But the Colonials had other plans.

As they did when they swept Miami of Ohio, the Colonials relied on strong goaltending to spoil the Beavers' senior night.

The Beavers found themselves down 2-0, with three minutes remaining in the second period, when junior forward Ryan Cramer snapped the twine for the 8th time this season.  Freshmen forward Brance Orban and sophomore forward Ben Kinne assisted on the goal.

George tied the game 8 minutes into the second period with an unassisted goal. It was his third goal of the weekend.

Before the Beaver fans could finish celebrating the goal, the Colonials were back on top, with a laser shot from the point, bringing the score up 3-2, Beavers behind.

That was it for the Beavers, as Robert Morris tacked on one more point to the score with an empty net goal, ending the game 4-2.

The Beavers are off this weekend, and then travel to Moon Township, Pennsylvania on Feb. 12 to take on Robert Morris again.

There are two home games left in the Glas, Feb. 19 and 20, against the Niagara University Purple Eagles.
