Not many of the spectators at Friday’s 67-65 loss to Northern State knew it, but as of last January, NSU Head Coach Don Meyer is the NCAA leader for career wins.  The victory over the Beavers made Meyer’s career win total 917.

The Wolves jumped to an early lead, making the score 9-3 in the first three minutes.  The Beavers fought back, eventually tying the game at 20.  The first half ended with the Beavers down by one, 34-33.

Senior Seth Haake led the Beavers scoring front, with 10 points, and added three rebounds to go with it.  Sophomore Bryce Tesdahl led the Beavers in boards with four.

The second half played out a lot like the first, the teams going back and forth, trading points.  Even though the tie was always close, the Beavers only held a lead for two and a half minutes.

The Beavers tied the score with 24 seconds left, when Tesdahl got a defensive rebound, and the Beavers rushed up the court, where Tesdahl finished with a layup.

The Wolves retained possession with 24 seconds left, and no shot clock.  They got the ball down the court and put up a jumper for the win, with 0.3 seconds remaining.

Haake led all Beaver scorers with 18 points and six boards, while Tesdahl posted 11 points, shooting 5-8, and four rebounds.

The Beavers were back on the hardwood Saturday night, Jan. 16 when they took on the University of Mary Marauders.  The Beavers finally broke their seven-game losing streak by steamrolling past the Marauders, 81-59.

The game began like Friday’s, as the teams traded points for the first five minutes.  At the five-minute mark, junior Patrick Cassidy sunk a layup to tie the game at 10.  A couple minutes later, Haake made a jump shot to put the Beavers in the lead, 12-10.

That was the last lead change for the game, as the Beavers put on the cruise control and steadily increased their lead.  The half ended with a nine-point lead in the Beavers favor.

Haake and freshmen Lance Rongstad ended the first half leading the Beavers in scoring, both with 8 points.  Tesdahl led the Beavers in rebounds at the half with five.

The Beavers continued to accelorate past the Marauders during the second half, extending their lead to as large as 28 points, when Haake made a free throw with five seconds remaining.  When the final buzzer sounded, the Beavers were up 81-59.

Three Beaver players ended the game with points in double digits: Haake had 18, Rongstad had 17 and freshmen David Berthene had 12.  Tesdahl concluded the game with eight points and 10 rebounds.

The Beavers take the court again, Saturday, Jan. 23 at 4 p.m., when Minnesota Duluth travels to the BSU Gymnasium.
