In a town known for its cold weather and lack of excitement, the winter often leaves students with a fair amount of free time on their hands.
One way to fill this time and become productive is through volunteering, and the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has many opportunities available for anyone interested.
Volunteers provide the DNR with help they may not have been able to afford.  It also builds experience and skills for those involved, something employers look for on a student's resume.
Many people have already given to this great cause, although their donation is one of time and energy, which the DNR has come to rely on over the years. In fact, more than 32,000 volunteers went to work for the DNR last year, donating $8.8 million worth of their time combined.  According to DNR estimates, that is the equivalent of 209 full-time staff members!
“We’re fortunate to have so many dedicated Minnesotans who are willing to donate their time and talents for conservation projects,” said Renée Vail, DNR Volunteer Programs Administrator. “We’re extremely grateful for their efforts. Many of our projects would not be possible without their help.”
Opportunities vary and there is something for every interest.  Work that has been done in the past includes lake water level monitoring, removal of garbage and debris from natural areas, transcribing messages, creating learning materials for use in schools and many other projects.
The work done benefits not just the DNR, but also the community by making the natural environment more accessible and saving money that is needed for other projects.
No prior outdoors experience is necessary to volunteer, just a desire to make a difference in the natural community.  Workers are supervised and trained as needed by DNR employees, who are there to help along the way.
In the past, students of Bemidji State University (BSU) and other community members have helped clean up at Lake Bemidji State Park, preparing the park each spring for the busy season ahead.
As a result of these efforts, the park is able to keep expenses low, making park features more enjoyable and affordable for visitors. Many other projects have been completed through volunteer efforts in our own city, most having to do with the DNR headquarters located here.
Help is needed at all times of the year and interested parties are urged to contact the DNR for information on how they can get involved.
For anyone who needs a boost to their skill set and wants to make a lasting difference in the community around them, volunteering for the DNR is a valuable way to achieve those goals.
Up to date information on how you can get involved can be found online at the DNR's web site, www.dnr.state.mn.us/volunteering, or by calling 888-646-6367.
