Though it hasn’t been stated publically, at the end of last semester, the Northern Student lost half of its staff, dwindling from a healthy group of 40 to 21 overworked, afflicted journalists.
As evidence by the full page, in-house ad that has run for the past two weeks, I am in need of a large amount of employees.
Confused by the lack of interest in being employed by the Northern Student, I have been contemplating every way possible to get additional dedicated, hardworking and passionate journalists to join our team.
I often wonder if people even read the newspaper, or if they simply look for the puzzles on the back of the publication with no intentions of opening it to see what’s inside. If that’s the case, then they don’t see how much work we put into making this newspaper all about the students.
Frequently I walk down the halls of BSU and hear students commenting about the newspaper, much of the time mentioning something that he or she would change. My question, why don’t you tell us?
There’s a suggestion box outside of our office that has been collecting cobwebs for longer than I’ve been Editor-in-Chief, and I’m sure that if you ask previous editors, they’ll tell you that it’s been ages since it’s been used.
Not to mention the fact that the last “letter to the editor” was written over three months ago. Let your voice be heard among the masses of people that make up this campus! We all know that you all have something to say.
Photos, catches and kills of the week are also a great way to get yourself out there, to be known by students, faculty and staff on campus. Don’t you want someone to stop you in the halls and say, “Hey, I saw you in the paper today!”
Working for the Northern Student can be beneficial for a multitude of majors and minors that BSU offers. Journalism students, Mass Communications, English and Creative and Professional Writing majors, isn’t this what you wanted to do for a living; write for money?
It’s a chance to get to know your writing style on a professional level, where there is room for mistakes and even more room to gain knowledge of other writing techniques.
Photographers, we need more pictures and therefore, we’re always looking for people to take them. Why not do something you already love for a newspaper that could one day get you a job for a photography studio or potentially another newspaper published worldwide down the line?
Anyone out there from the Business and Marketing departments actually reading this article, we have space for you too! We recently lost our Advertising Sales Manager and all our Advertising Representatives; this could be the area for you.
The Northern Student can be a venue for everyone with passions from writing to photography, business to marketing and everywhere in between.
We’re always open to new ideas, columns, pieces etc. We need your opinion, are you seeing everything you want to in the newspaper?
So I challenge you, students of Bemidji State University, to challenge us. Apply for a position on the Northern Student and help us with our quest to change and expand this paper; our race to twelve pages.
