Apple Inc. recently released a new product for Mac users to drool over, but is it really everything they’ve ever wanted? Considering the hype surrounding the new iPad, one would think that it is something new and interesting. But at first glance, it looks like nothing more than a larger version of the iPhone.
Apple President Steve Jobs described the iPad as a cross between a laptop and a smart phone. It is supposed to be a more efficient and “intimate” way to surf the internet with a high resolution screen that is supposed to enhance the movie viewing expirience. It is also built for e-books, since the 9.5 by 7.5 inches toy fits into hands a little nicer than the iPhone does.
So why not just get a laptop and call it a day? Well, like the iPhone, this tool can display screens either landscape or portrait style with just a turn. There will also be a plethora of applications available, from games to music to just about anything.
The downside of the iPad is the price. In just under two months when it will go on sale, it’ll cost between $500 and $850, depending on how many gigabytes you want and whether you sign up for the 3G network. Sure, it’s not expensive considering how much it can do, but it’s certainly not pocket change.
There’s also the fact that it is frankly a glorified iPhone. It doesn’t seem to be different enough to warrant such hype, except for the size and better screen. If it is a step towards the future, it only seems to be a little one. It might be better to wait and see what Apple will create next.
I’m not a Mac user myself, preferring to stick with my trusty PC. But the unforgivably geeky person in me gets a little excited when I hear about the iPad.
It’s a laptop, a Kindle, a photo gallery and a high resolution television all wrapped into a half-inch-thick package. It’s light, extremely portable, and the more you feel like you might accidentally break it, the better the technology, right?
In any case, Apple's iPad might be worth looking in to. If you have money to blow, then it couldn’t hurt to jump on the technologic bandwagon.
