It’s hard to find good Mexican food in this small, northern Minnesota town. Luckily for us, a Qdoba was born just last year on the south shore of Lake Bemidji.
Sure, the name is hard to pronounce, but most people will know what you’re talking about when you say, “Let’s go to that fast-food Mexican place!”
There are so many seats, but not enough customers. It could be because a lot of people have never tried Qdoba and the menu may be overwhelming for the newcomers, or it could be the overpriced tacos. Aside from the giant menu over the food-crafting area, the restaurant is quite plain.
The inside is pure wood and metal, although the bareness is nothing a picture frame or two couldn’t fix.
Set up just like Subway, you are able to build your own meal. Whether it’s a burrito, some tacos, a salad, or if you’re just craving some nachos, you are the boss when it comes to your feast.
The 3-Cheese Nachos are to die for. Made with a special nacho cheese, homemade tortilla chips and topped with grilled chicken, steak, ground beef or pulled pork and whatever else you crave. Don’t eat too slowly though. The chips soaking in the cheese may become extremely soggy.
Feeling daring? Daring enough to attack one of the giant burritos? Stuffed with cilantro-lime rice, black or pinto beans, salsa, sour cream and cheese with your choice of meat, it is one of the heaviest burritos you will ever carry.
It’s worth its time and size though, because you get to put whatever you want on the inside, so you know you’ll like it.
The grilled chicken is probably the most delicious topping for your nachos, stuffer for your burrito and filler for your quesadilla.
On a diet? Qdoba.com provides a nutritional calculator that allows you to make your meal online first and tells you how many calories are in it. Taco salads are always a healthier choice over the 3 lb. burrito or the 3-Cheese Nachos.
So what if you don’t know how to pronounce the name? I still suggest that everyone tries this new fast-food Mexican restaurant across the street from the Hampton Inn. Add a little spice to this cold weather!
