If any restaurant deserves a great review, it’s Erbert and Gerbert’s. This sandwich shop is just walking distance from the campus and will deliver if you’re feeling lazy or if winter has finally hit.
Unlike most sub shops, Erbert and Gerbert’s is filled with stories of colorful characters, which are who the subs are named after. To a newcomer, you’ll probably feel a little foolish ordering a “Boney Billy” or “The Girf.”
It is just so much easier to say “Turkey with cheese, hold the mayo,” but that's what makes Erbert and Gerbert’s so unique. Think of it as a challenge.
However, a side order of soup or chili won’t be so awkward. The original names of the soups are used and they come in a small carton that is just the right size to wash your sandwich down.
The service is quick and the employees are very excited to see customers. They will make sure your sandwich is made with high quality in record time. Not craving soup or chili? Not a problem—freshly baked cookies and bags of chips are also offered.
As you unwrap the cleanly crafted sub, you will notice a huge wad of bread in the wrapper. It's the guts. Erbert and Gerbert’s have a different technique to keeping all of the ingredients inside; they cut out the inside of the bread.
Whether or not someone else came up with the idea, Erbert and Gerbert’s follows the brilliant idea of giving the bread to you rather than throwing it away. No one knows why, but this piece of moist bread is delicious, and not to mention the perfect dipping item for your soup.
As you sit down in the restaurant to enjoy a highly-craved sandwich, you will notice frames on all the walls that include a storybook. Each frame has a different page showing, which just so happen to be the stories of the sandwich names.
The only shock during your visit might be a strong taste in your mouth. Erbert and Gerbert’s use a strong-flavored honey mustard that isn’t for everyone, but it is still edible.
All in all, Erbert and Gerbert’s a very convenient sandwich shop for this cold town of Bemidji. Unfortunately, they do charge a little extra for delivery.
There are 16 unique subs to choose from, all of which come with a story of their name. So stop on by for story time and help yourself to a sandwich too.
