The Decline of SNL

Nowadays, it’s hard to hear someone say, “That was a good SNL last weekend.” Around the beginning of the twenty-first century, it seems as though Saturday Night Live (SNL) has been on downhill slide through corny political humor and repetitive character personalities to lame skits. Fashion Trends to Watch For

How to Blend in With NYC in Little Ol' Bemidji

We all know that Bemidji isn't the place to look if you're hoping to find top-of-the-line fashion. We're so far from any major cities that companies don't even bother sending their current clothing lines to their stores here, instead supplying us with tired, seasons old and behind-the-times fashion. The iPad: a Step Further for the Laptop?

Apple Inc. recently released a new product for Mac users to drool over, but is it really everything they’ve ever wanted?  Considering the hype surrounding the new iPad, one would think that it is something new and interesting. Full story

The Race to Twelve Pages

In the chaos of all that is Bemidji State University (BSU), I have found myself struggling to acquire the talent and drive that it takes to be the Editor-in-Chief of the Northern Student. Full story

Addiction to Facebook?

Last week in the Superlab I noticed that none of the computers I needed were available, and all of the people using them were on Facebook.  This told me two things: One, that I needed to learn how to use flash drives or put files on the internet; and two, that people spend too much time on Facebook. Food and Travel

Erbert And Gerbert’s

Soup, Subs and Stories

If any restaurant deserves a great review, it’s Erbert and Gerbert’s. This sandwich shop is just walking distance from the campus and will deliver if you’re feeling lazy or if winter has finally hit.   Unlike most sub shops, Erbert and Gerbert’s is filled with stories of colorful characters, which are who the subs are named after.

Qdoba: A Name Everyone Knows, but Doesn't Know How to Say

It’s hard to find good Mexican food in this small, northern Minnesota town. Luckily for us, a Qdoba was born just last year on the south shore of Lake Bemidji.   Sure, the name is hard to pronounce, but most people will know what you’re talking about when you say, “Let’s go to that fast-food Mexican place!”   There are so many seats, but not enough customers.

Wild Hare Bistro & Coffeehouse

World Flavors, Local Flair

Warning: dim lights! We all know what that means; the dimmer the lights, the more expensive the restaurant. Located on 6th & Minnesota Avenue is a cute, family-owned coffee shop that fills your breakfast and lunch cravings.   Though it may be overpriced, luckily this restaurant is still affordable for most college students. 4 comments

Bucky Travels to Cuba

This week I will be accompanying Bucky as he is welcomed by the Caribbean Sea and the hundreds of tropical Caribbean Islands that I and many others call paradise. As befits heaven-on-earth, there is much to enjoy, see and do.   Beaches, boats and bikinis are Caribbean vacation essentials.

Bucky's Island Hopping

Bucky goes island hopping in the Carribean

What better timing to be relaxing on white and black sand beaches in the Caribbean islands than the start of winter? This week Bucky will be guided on his tour throughout the archipelago. The Caribbean (usually referred to as Caribbean islands) is the region consisting of the Caribbean Sea, its islands and surrounding coasts.

Dive Into Music and Discover Its "Undercurrents"

Book Review

In a world where the “Top 40” is seemingly the predominant music preference, it is important to recognize the vast array of genres that are available and the effect they have on society.   In the realm of mass media, music is a medium that is often ignored.

The Dumbest Generation by Mark Bauerlein

Log off of Facebook, turn that cell phone off, and step away from Spider Solitaire. Mark Bauerlein has made it all clear in his book, "The Dumbest Generation: How the Digital Age Stupefies Young Americans and Jeopardizes Our Future," that we are doomed.

Ask Allie

Ask Allie

Holding On

Dear Allie,       I have a boyfriend that I have been dating for one year now but I’m beginning to rethink our relationship. He has become boring. What do I do?                                                                                                           Holding On   Dear Holding On,       You have to ask yourself exactly what are you holding on to? Are you holding on to a real relationship or the idea of being in a relationship? You could just be stuck in a rut.

Ask Allie

Good Boy

Dear Allie,       I really like this girl and I want to ask her out. Here is the problem though — I’ve learned that she does not want to corrupt me.  She does more crazy things than I do, but I still want to be with her.

Ask Allie

Slowly Losing It

Dear Allie,   I’ve been having some problems with my future in-laws. They are driving me a little crazy. What do I do?   Slowly Losing It       Dear Slowly Losing It,       I think any person that is getting married is going to have problems with their in-laws.

Ask Allie

Uncertain

Dear Allie,   I had a recent pregnancy scare and my boyfriend wasn't supportive. He kept saying, “I hope not.” What should I do?                                                                                                                         Uncertain   Dear Uncertain,       Two words—DUMP HIM!  To clarify my opinion, I’m guessing it’s not like you want to be pregnant, it just might have happened.

Ask Allie

What To Do

Dear Allie,       I really like this guy. He’s nice, sweet, and kind. The only problem is that he is 12 years older than me and has a kid. I’m 22 years old. Is it wrong to date someone that much older than me?                                                                                                           What to do     Dear What to do,       I don’t want to say that is wrong, but I don’t want to say that it’s right either.

Ask Allie

Torn

Dear Allie,       I’ve been on a couple dates with this guy.  He’s really nice and everything, but I just don’t feel anything between us. I don’t want to hurt him, but I don’t want to date him anymore either.

Ask Allie

Heartbroken

Dear Allie,       I caught my boyfriend cheating on me with my best friend. They both said they are sorry and it’ll never happen again. I want to believe them, but I don’t know. Please help me.   Heartbroken       Dear Heartbroken,       Let me start by saying my sympathy goes out to you.

Ask Allie

Completely Stumped

Dear Allie,       I don’t usually write about this type of thing, but I’m so confused. I’m the girl who always falls for the wrong guy, the loser who makes all mothers nervous. It’s not that I don’t have good guys in my life, but they are friends and no matter how much time I spend with them I don’t feel the click, the connection I do with the type I do fall for.

Ask Allie

Frantic and Frustrated

Q:   I have been assigned to a group in class for a group project, but we don't get along with each other. What should I do?   Frantic and Frustrated     A:   Dear Frantic, I know it's hard, but it's for a class and I'm sure all of you want to get a good grade.

Ask Allie

Lonely on Christmas

Dear Allie,   I don’t get to go home for Christmas and I’ll be stuck here in Bemidji. I feel alone. What should I do?   Lonely on Christmas     Dear Lonely on Christmas,       Find some other friends that are in the same predicament you are in and do a Christmas dinner together! Each of you decide what to make, pick someone’s place to have it at, maybe even get simple gifts for each other.

Ask Allie

Lonely Boy

Dear Allie,   My roommate is moving out, I have nothing in common with any of the guys on my floor, and I feel like I don't fit in with my friends. What should I do?   Lonely Boy   Dear Lonely Boy,   I would bet that other guys and girls feel the same way.

Letter to the Editor

Letter #7

Safety on Campus       My experience with Bemidji State University (BSU) has, for the most part, been very secure. My little brother bought me pepper spray to take to college because I was the oldest in the family and he heard about some of the bad things that could happen to girls on campuses.

Letter #6

In Response to Letter #4

In response to James Edwards:      Coach Matt Bowen has done everything right in his time with BSU. Building a successful program that had no returning talent, had a terrible reputation around campus, failed academically, and has very little support from school, students, and community, compared to other schools in the conference, is an almost impossible task.

Letter #5

I have been asked by several people to write this letter to the editor in regards to the handicap parking spaces on the BSU campus.  I must admit it really gets frustrating knowing I need a space and most of the time it’s a dog-eat-dog race to get one.

Letter #4

"Winning is not everything" is the message being sent to our beloved community. The men's basketball team has been lead by Matt Bowen since 2006. The great community of Bemidji has not seen one conference, regional, or national title.

Letter #3

A few years ago, I was in my senior year and staying in the dorms of Linden Hall. This was before it was torn down and rebuilt. I had noticed an opportunity buying closeout and discounted products and reselling them online. Starting off with a couple of small items, it had slowly grown to the point that my dorm room was filled with boxes of stock.

Letter #2

It seems odd to write a reply to someone else’s reply, but I feel that I have a valid point that deserves to be addressed. This letter is a response to the “Letter to the Editor” written by Jennifer Phillips. Jennifer’s own letter was a reply to the “Observation of Unfortunate Habits” written by Sara Dennison.

Letter #1

A good portion of my job as Sustainability Coordinator is educating the campus community.  The delicate situation of making others aware and empowered instead of guilty anddisengaged is not an easy task.  F rom my perspective, a fabulous article was written recently about the over-use of the buttons to open doors.
