One day each year, a non-profit movement called To Write Love on Her Arms (TWLOHA) focuses on providing hope and support for people struggling with issues such as depression, addiction, self-harm and suicide by involving literally anyone and everyone passing by.
Their approach is simple; each year on Nov. 13, people are encouraged to write the word "love" on their forearms to show their support for those who are fighting or trying to recover from depression.
According to TWLOHA’s official site, the group’s mission is “to encourage, inform, inspire, and also to invest directly into treatment and recovery.”
From 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Nov. 13, representatives from Bemidji State University’s (BSU) Psychology Club gathered in the Lower Hobson Union, writing "love" on students’ arms in a variety of colors and languages.
It may have only taken a few moments to write "love" on the participants’ arms, but after that, everyone they interacted with during the day would see it.
The gesture was a simple but effective way of spreading the word about a serious issue that most people have experienced in some way, whether personally or through a friend, family member or acquaintance.
TWLOHA’s message is simple: every individual person was created to love and be loved.
The group’s mission began in 2006 with a story and a desire to change lives. The event continues each year as more and more people participate and, through the simplest of actions, spread a message of hope.
