In keeping with the Halloween spirit, Bemidji State University's (BSU) Theater Unlimited club provided professional quality makeup for an affordable price to students who wished to spice up their Halloween costumes.
"[It was] a cool concept, having your face painted for a minimal charge," said student Daniel Oswald.
Theater Unlimited set up shop at the Black Box Theater in Bangsberg, working from 1-5 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 30 and Saturday, Oct. 31. Although Theater Unlimited didn’t expect a large turnout on Friday, they opened just in case. A dozen people showed up on Halloween alone, which made up for Friday's minimal turnout.
Theater Unlimited members were kept busy, but the students waiting their turn didn't lack entertainment. While waiting, students enjoyed the movie "REPO! A Genetic Opera," had a few snacks and chatted with friends.
"[I am] pretty excited to get professional face paint done," said Katie Dehart in anticipation.
One of the group's specialties was showing off a person’s natural beauty, and they managed to achieve this whether the subject was dressing up as a beautiful earth goddess or a frightening zombie.
For three to eight dollars, depending on the size and complexity of the design, students could choose from designs ranging from famous movie villains to classic monsters to a variety of animals and other stylized designs.
This is the first time Theater Unlimited has organized doing Halloween makeup for students, but according to a Theater Unlimited member they hope to make this an annual event.
Future plans include package deals for clubs and groups with ten or more members that would include knocking a dollar off of the already low prices if the makeup is connected with a group activity.
Theater Unlimited tested this plan out this year with the makeup for Geek Club's "Zombie Shuffle."
The makeup was done well and appreciated by all who participated. Reactions from participants were very positive.
All in all it was a good turnout. When participant Eli Steffens was asked if he was satisfied with the makeup job and if he'd come back next year, he said “Yes, and yes!”
