The Random Acts of Kindness program is funded by the Kopp Family foundation for currently enrolled Bemidji State University (BSU) students who are in a financial crisis and are in need of money.  This year, 31 students received rewards for the fall semester, and funds were held back for those who need it for the spring semester.

In order to receive this award there are two guidelines that are used for distribution of funds. First, a student can ask for it anytime during their academic year once. Second, the minimum a student can recieve is $50, and the maximum is $100.

There are four ways to access the account. One: a professor can suggest it when they notice a student is in a financial crisis and are in need of a little cash to help them out.

Two: to request it, the student needs to provide their name, student I.D. number, how much money they are asking for, and how the funds will be used.

Three: In order to receive the award one must first contact Vice President for Student Development and Enrollment Dr. Lisa Erwin.  When Erwin receives the request, she will do three different things.

For starters, Erwin will communicate approval and inform the student when a check from the Cashiers Office will be available. Then she will request the faculty or staff member to encourage the student who receives the award to send a thank you letter or note to the Kopp Foundation. Lastly, Erwin will ask the staff or faculty member to share the letter or note address with the student who will be receiving the funds.

Four: the check provided will be payable under the student's name.  All those who participate will remain confidential.

Erwin was unavailable for an interview.
