Hubble Sees Distant Galaxies
(BBC)
New pictures have been acquired by the Hubble Telescope’s new Wide-Field Camera 3 (WFC3), a highly sensitive camera that can see starlight from far-off objects.
These pictures show a range of new galaxies in deep space and could be the most distant yet observed. Some of the new images are from the region of sky known as the Hubble Ultra Deep Field, a region that was first viewed five years ago.
The WFC3 camera was added to the Hubble earlier this year and is sensitive to infrared light, which has a wavelength longer than light in the visible spectrum. The light is generated by stars that died out within the first one billion years of the universe, allowing scientists to look "back in time."
