Atom-Smasher Sets New Record
(BBC News)
The Large Hadron Collider (LHC), had a successful re-launch on Nov. 20 and 29. The LHC broke international records by generating over a trillion volts of electrical energy, becoming the most powerful particle accelerator in the world.
The purpose of the LHC is to study the smallest building blocks of matter by smashing apart atoms and sub-atomic particles.
The LHC consists of a massive circular tunnel encompassing an area of 27 kilometers, and is located beneath the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) facility in Switzerland.
Although electrical problems caused the massive subterranean device to be prematurely shut down after its first launch over a year ago, the LHC has been undergoing repairs to ensure that there would be no more costly mistakes.
Researchers working on the collider say that they are delighted with the quick progress they have made since the re-launch.
