On Wednesday, Oct. 21, Dr. John E. Quistgaard, President of Bemidji State University (BSU) and Northwest Technical College (NTC), sent out an e-mail to the students, staff and faculty of BSU and NTC, informing them of a major change for the University and College.
“I have notified Chancellor McCormick that I will be retiring as president of Bemidji State University and Northwest Technical College in mid-summer 2010,” said Quistgaard in the e-mail.
After eight plus years serving as BSU’s ninth and NTC’s third president, Dr. Quistgaard expressed feelings of admiration and honor in serving the campus community with his presidency.
“I have valued so much the opportunities to work with students and to learn about their experiences they gain here,” said Quistgaard in his retirement announcement.
Dr. Quistgaard will be retiring from his role as president for the university and college mid-summer of 2010.
Chancellor McCormick will be assigning an advisory search committee to select his replacement. The committee will search nationwide in hopes of finding a candidate to begin immediately following Dr. Quistgaard’s retirement.
Dr. Quistgaard felt that announcing his retirement so far in advance would give the committee time to search for a replacement that could be ready to take his place upon his leave.
Dr. Quistgaard began is career at BSU in 1979 as Admissions Officer for one year.
His roles at the University have spanned across many positions including Director of Admissions and Advising (1980-1987), Dean of Undergraduate Admissions and Graduate Studies (1988-1992), Acting Vice President for Academic and Student Affairs (1993-1994), Vice President for Academic Affairs and Dean of Academic Services (1994-1997), Vice President for Academic and Student Affairs (1997-2001) and finally in 2001, took over as President of BSU and NTC.
President Dr. Quistgaard will be holding a press conference regarding his retirement Thursday, Oct. 22, from 9 to 10 a.m.
