Just a short five-minute drive from campus, Beltrami Humane Society (BHS) provides a safe haven for 90 cats and 54 dogs just waiting for the right person to take them home.
Located right off of Paul Bunyan drive on Carr Lake Road, this no-kill animal shelter is home to playful cats, kittens, dogs and puppies looking for a good home.
“Our main purpose is to be here to benefit homeless animals, to provide them with a safe place to live and to adopt them to a new, better home,” said Executive Director of the Humane Society Kit Belcher.
With so many cats and dogs to protect and care for, BHS holds many fundraisers with hopes that the community of Beltrami County will attend to help them in their quest for a better place.
On the weekend of Nov. 21-22, BHS is holding its annual “Santa Paws” fundraiser, an event where for $15 anyone can bring in his or her dog, cat, kitten or puppy and have afive by seven photograph taken with them. The pictures will be ready to print by the holidays and is a great way to give a little help to the shelter.
Also at the event will be the opportunity for owners to install a microchip in their pet to locate it if it gets lost or stolen. The service will be offered for $35 and proceeds will be given to the Humane Society.
Along with “Santa Paws,” “Tree of Hope” provides another chance to help the shelter out. For every $10 the Humane Society is given, employees of BHS will illuminate another light in a tree near the shelter with hopes that the entire tree will be lit by the end of the holiday season.
Volunteering, along with fundraising, is another way the community can lend a helping hand. BHS happily welcomes any volunteers to help with the animals and services at the shelter.
“Volunteering at Beltrami is great,” said freshman and BHS volunteer Betsy Cason. “The staff is kind and seems to care greatly about what they are doing, and the animals are generally playful and not skittish.”
On a typical day, volunteers walk dogs, play with the cats, and offer any kind of assistance to the daily staff at the shelter.
Fostering an animal is also available to the public, along with Adopt-a-Kennel, which is another way to help the shelter financially. For $25/month or $250/year, anyone can help financially by supporting a kennel.
