BSU Student Loses Battle with Cancer

  On Tuesday, February 9, Bemidji State University (BSU) lost senior Erik Paul Ludwinski, age 24, to his lifelong battle against neuroblastoma.  Born on March 16, 1985, in Oakland, California, Ludwinski and his family moved several times before residing in Park Rapids, MN in 1998.

One individual was cited for possession of a small amount of marijuana, and University conduct charges were forwarded.   Traffic Violation, Moving A vehicle was witnessed driving recklessly in the Maple Hall parking lot.

DFL Caucus Interesting for Students, Candidates

   Although the DFL caucus on campus had a small turnout, it gave Bemidji State University (BSU) students a chance to become publicly involved and helped give the candidates an advantage.       Several students said they showed up just to experience the caucus process.

Fraternity Omega Phi Raises Awareness for the Homeless

    What does staying in a cardboard box out in the cold for 72 hours have to do with Bemidji?     Omega Phi, a Bemidji State University (BSU) fraternity, stayed out in the cold for three days straight last week to raise awareness of homelessness in the Bemidji area.

STLF’s "Pay It Forward" Tour

      Can nine days make a difference in one’s life?  Students Today, Leaders Forever (STLF) has been answering "yes" to this question since spring break of 2004.      For five years, college students involved in STLF (a nationwide organization) have dedicated their spring breaks to volunteering in several different cities on a cross-country road trip.

            Every college student quickly becomes acquainted with the campus bookstore. Bemidji State University (BSU) Bookstore's new textbook manager Alissa Nollan is no exception.     Nollan started the job a month ago after graduating with a degree in Creative Writing from Augsburg College.

    Twenty-year-old Gary Wayne Jennings returned home last Saturday at 8:50 p.m. to find four members of his family unconscious on the ground in their home and promptly called the sheriff’s office for help.          The Beltrami County Sheriff’s Office responded to the “unknown medical crisis” call from Frohn Township.

GOP Governor Forum

Questions, Debates and Finger Pointing

      Tuesday, January 26, a GOP governor forum was held at Bemidji State University (BSU). Students and members of the community were encouraged to join, and they sure did. Even though some showed up fashionably late, the whole room was eventually filled and more chairs had to be added.

    Last week, President Barak Obama announced his intent to nominate Bemidji State University (BSU) alumn Michele M. Leonhart for Administrator of Drug Enforcement, a position on the United States Department of Justice, Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA).

Coffeehouse a Success!

      The second floor lounge of Oak Hall resonated with laughter, music and applause last Thursday, Jan. 21 during the first Rivers Meeting coffeehouse held in two years.     The event began at 6 p.m. with student Katie Corning, who has a degree in music and is working on a nursing degree.

Former Senator Mark Dayton Visits BSU

The day after he officially announced his candidacy for governor, Democrat and former Sen. Mark Dayton visited Bemidji State University (BSU) on day three of his 87 counties in 87-days campaign.   Dayton came to Bemidji promoting his slogan “Mark Dayton for a Better Minnesota.

  Just thinking about a coffeehouse creates images of low lighting, artsy crowds and snaps instead of applause. Rivers Meeting, and Bemidji State University (BSU) organization, has its own version to be held on Jan. 21 with a slightly a different atmosphere.

RAK: Random Acts of Kindness

  The Random Acts of Kindness program is funded by the Kopp Family foundation for currently enrolled Bemidji State University (BSU) students who are in a financial crisis and are in need of money.  This year, 31 students received rewards for the fall semester, and funds were held back for those who need it for the spring semester.

"Testimony" on Exhibit at the Talley Gallery

There’s an old adage which states that before making a judgement about someone, it is necessary to walk a mile in their shoes. This saying embodies the spirit behind the work of artist Holly Wong; in her paintings, her writings and her life.   In "Testimony," her exhibit at Bemidji State University’s (BSU) Talley Gallery, Wong displays profound works showing scenes of pain, warfare, bloodshed and suffering in a visually striking and emotionally stirring way, giving the viewer a first-hand look into the lives and deaths of their fellow human beings.

A Walk for Freedom

    In honor of Martin Luther King Jr., a group of walkers carried flags and were escorted by police cars as part of the annual Freedom Walk.   The Freedom Walk, held on Sunday, Jan. 17, stretched from the base of the statues of Paul and Babe in Paul Bunyan Park and ended at the American Indian Resource Center (AIRC).

Two Women Craft Futures for BSU Students

  Greeted by the smell of hot cider and cookies, visitors to the David Park House on Dec. 4 found a homey atmosphere to search out gifts for family and friends.   The Caroline Andrican Craft Sale is an annual event that raises money for scholarships here at Bemidji State University (BSU).

Finding Peace

Care for a glimpse of the Alaskan winderness and rural Minnesota? The "Finding Peace" gallery showing by Apryl Fischer and Alyssa Hodnefield is now open to the public in the Talley Gallery.   The combined exhibit “Finding Peace” opened on November 30th, with every aspect of the gallery, from the lighting to the color and placement of the walls, designed by the two artists.

      For the people who have been patiently waiting for our theater to finish, it looks like the time finally has come. According CEC Theater (cectheaters.com), the Bemidji theater will be re-opening on Friday, Nov. 20. Since the movie theater will be opening in the very near future, there are many new movies for people to be excited about.

Beltrami Humane Society Provides Hope for Forgotten Animals

    Just a short five-minute drive from campus, Beltrami Humane Society (BHS) provides a safe haven for 90 cats and 54 dogs just waiting for the right person to take them home. Located right off of Paul Bunyan drive on Carr Lake Road, this no-kill animal shelter is home to playful cats, kittens, dogs and puppies looking for a good home.

To Write Love on Her Arms

      One day each year, a non-profit movement called To Write Love on Her Arms (TWLOHA) focuses on providing hope and support for people struggling with issues such as depression, addiction, self-harm and suicide by involving literally anyone and everyone passing by.

                 Although President Dr. Jon E. Quistgaard is completing his ninth and final year at Bemidji State University (BSU), there is much more to this successful man than sitting behind a desk and filling out paper work.

Bags of Wishes

  Last year alone the nearby homeless shelter was forced to turn away 265 children and their families because House of Hospitality (HOH) did not have enough capacity to provide everyone with much needed shelter.   These unfortunate statistics raised awareness in Beltrami County and finally the community chose to take action.

“Are you here for a room?” queried the receptionist at the front desk. After checking in, guests at the Haunted Hotel are taken to their rooms by a hotel employee.  Unfortunately, they hit some snags along the way.   On Halloween, the Lutheran Campus Center’s Haunted Hotel was crawling with the figures of children’s nightmares.

  In keeping with the Halloween spirit, Bemidji State University's (BSU) Theater Unlimited club provided professional quality makeup for an affordable price to students who wished to spice up their Halloween costumes.   "[It was] a cool concept, having your face painted for a minimal charge," said student Daniel Oswald.

Great Pumpkin Fun Run

Despite ice on the ground and a chill in the air from the blizzard the previous night, 52 runners came out for this year’s fun run. The seventh annual Great Pumpkin Fun Run, normally held the day before Halloween, took place on Oct. 31 this year.

New Liberal Education: Permission for Take Off?

Most students are familiar with the drill; in order to graduate, those eleven categories of liberal education must be knocked out first. For some, this is a burden that slows them down on their way to more exciting course materials.  To others, the liberal education program acts as a stepping stone toward academic self-discovery.

Zombies Shuffle for Food Shelf

Zombies walked the streets of Bemidji Halloween night, but their purpose was anything but malevolent. Members of BSU’s Gaming & Entertainment Enthusiast Klub (G.E.E.K.) dressed up as the living dead and went door to door throughout the community collecting canned food and other non-perishables for the local food shelf, with Michael Jackson’s "Thriller" playing in the background.

  Hubble Sees Distant Galaxies (BBC)   New pictures have been acquired by the Hubble Telescope’s new Wide-Field Camera 3 (WFC3), a highly sensitive camera that can see starlight from far-off objects.   These pictures show a range of new galaxies in deep space and could be the most distant yet observed.

  Steven Tyler Leaves Aerosmith (AP – Star Tribune)   Steve Tyler, front man for legendary rock band Aerosmith, is leaving the band to presumably start a solo career. According to an announcement made on a Concord, NH radio station by the band’s lead guitarist Joe Perry, Tyler had been drifting further and further away from the rest of the band after an injury in August ended their tour prematurely.

Swine Flu Shortage Spurs Higher Demand

Now that more than 22 million doses of the H1N1 vaccine are available, it should be easier for most Americans to get their dose, according to a statement issued Tuesday, Oct. 27 by U.S health officials. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) is responding to the rising demand, but the predicted number of vaccines that were supposed to be available by mid-October has been lowered from 120 million to 45 million, frustrating Americans who have been waiting months for their shots.

FAA Revokes Wayward Pilots’ Licenses

After an incident of careless piloting that occurred last week, two Northwest Airline pilots had their piloting licenses revoked. The two pilots of NWA Flight 188, Capt. Timothy Cheney of WA and 1st Officer Richard Cole of OR, overflew their destination airport after being out of contact with air traffic controllers, and claimed that they were distracted because they were using personal laptop computers.
