Just When You Thought Hinder’s “Lips of an Angel” Couldn’t Sound Any Worse...

Many students love spending their down time on social networking sites and listening to their favorite music. Perhaps even singing along. But is this a trend that should be cashed in on?

Los Angeles-based social networking giant, Myspace, hopes so. Facing fierce competition from rival Facebook, Myspace launched its latest development this week – a new online karaoke service.

The new web site (http://ksolo.myspace.com/), which launched on April 29, allows Myspace members to sing, record and share their favorite songs with friends. The song database currently includes between 2,000 and 3,000 songs available, all with permission from music publishers.

Co-owner and President of Myspace, Tom Anderson, has high hopes for the new service. In a recent press release he stated, “(Myspace Karaoke) is in part because music is so popular on our site,” said Anderson. “But also because karaoke is such a fun and social thing, which is what we’re about too. It’s not as much fun to go to karaoke alone, but when you do it through the Internet or on your MySpace page, then you can share it with people.”

Interested users need a Myspace account, Internet connection and microphone to get in on the singing action. The Myspace Karaoke site works by presenting music with vocals removed and lyrics for users to sing over. Vocal effects are also available.

“It sounds fun for a little bit, but it doesn’t make me want to use Myspace for that feature,” said BSU Junior Derek Decker, who does not currently have a Myspace account.

If singing isn’t your thing you can also listen to the songs that other users may or may not have butchered. For what it’s worth, at time of press the second most played song on KSolo was “Oops I Farted Again.”
