The "Tonight Show" saw the last of Conan O’Brien on Friday, Jan. 22. NBC announced that O'Brien’s time hosting the "Tonight Show" was over, and that they are still working out time slots for the show.
“I’m very upset that Conan O’Brien’s leaving the 'Tonight Show'," said junior Gabe Permann. "I was just settling in with him being the host. And he was hilarious.”
O'Brien’s final show was an amazing collaboration between a selection of Hollywood celebrities. His guest list started off with “The Office” star Steve Carrell performing a humorous network exit interview.
Carrell was followed by Academy Award winner Tom Hanks, reminiscing about his past with O'Brien: how they met on Saturday Night Live (SNL) while O'Brien was still a writer there, and described how Hanks coined O'Brien’s nickname, “COCO.”
It was rumored that NBC forked out $500,000 for Hanks's walk out song, “Lovely Rita,” by the Beatles.
O'Brien’s last musical guest was Neil Young, who performed his classic song, “Long May You Run.”
After the usual "Tonight Show" segments, O'Brien gave a heartfelt farewell speech. He discussed his history with NBC, and how much he enjoyed hosting his short term on the "Tonight Show."
O'Brien wrapped up his final segment with funny man Will Ferrell, as they performed the song “Freebird” by Lynyrd Skynyrd.
"Conan O’Brien and Will Ferrell’s 'Freebird' performance was awesome and hilarious," said junior Kendall Doom. "I’m glad that Will Ferrell pulled out the cowbell and started banging it and dancing around the stage. That was classic.”
Although it seems that NBC played bad guy in their recent break up with O'Brien, he had nothing to say but appreciation for the network that employed him for close to 20 years.
O'Brien made sure that he wasn’t leaving the show empty handed. NBC agreed to give him a severance package of $45 million, and $12 million of that to be divided among his crew.
Although the audience of the "Tonight Show" will surely miss the hilarious antics of O’Brien, it probably won’t be the last America sees of him.
