Bemidji State University’s (BSU) Music Dept. has featured many talents over the years, including vocalist Tony Tammaro. Tammaro performed last Sunday at the Carl O. Thompson Recital Hall in the Bangsberg Fine Arts Complex.
Tony is “extremely artistic" and "both [his] tenor and counter tenor repertoire demonstrate his versatility,” said Dr. Brad Logan.
Tammaro sang three songs by John Dowlad, including "Come Again, Sweet Love, Flow, My Tears" and "Weep You No More, Sad Fountains." Tammaro also sang two songs composed by G.F. Handel: "Verdi Prati" from "Alcina" and "Hymen, Haste!" from "Semele."
"Semele" is significant to Tamarro because in June of last year he had the opportunity to perform the role of "Athamas" with the Lyric Opera of the North in Duluth, Minn. This was one of Tammaro's first chances to perform a non-choral role in an opera.
Tammaro performed three songs by Franz Schubert during his recital, including "Der Vollmond strahlt auf Bergeshöhn" from "Rosamunde," "Sei mir gegrüßt" and "Ganymed." Tammaro also sang three songs by Samuel Barber, including "Sleep Now, Rain Has Fallen" and "Solitary Hotel" from "Despite and Still."
He was accompanied by harpsichord and piano, played by the musical talent of Matthew Goinz.
“Tony’s range and emotion was mov[ing and] palpable as he wove the stories of the songs. His pure countertenor was remarkable and a joy,” said one audience member.
