Explosions, Storms and Far-Fetched Scenarios

Never before has a date been so significant to so many cultures. The new action film "2012," starring John Cusack, is full of many well done special effects and bases its story on the Mayan calendar.
The new film was released to theaters at the same time "New Moon" was released for those teenage girls who couldn’t wait any longer. Luckily for the stars and director of "2012," they were still a big hit that caused a lot of talk on the street.
According to the Mayan calendar, the world will end on December 21, 2012 due to the magnetic fields reversing, making the North and South poles switch. If that isn’t spooky enough for you, apparently the Mayans haven’t been wrong yet. Sony Pictures tells us the future by releasing this film of what they think will happen.
When the government discovers the end of the world is near, they leave the world out. I know what you’re thinking, “Oh great, there’s politics in the movie, that means a lot of boring parts.” Don’t sweat! The political portions of the movie are easy to understand and are interesting, most of the time. Plus, all country leaders are represented in the movie.
The man, who plays the role of the Russian leader, is probably the most annoying character in the whole film. His giant lips must prevent him from enunciating because you can’t understand a word he’s saying when he’s screaming.
Cusack plays a divorced father of two who saves his family in an attempt to get out of California, and the entire United States. The female playing Cusack's daughter is an unknown, but the aspiring actress will definitely become a star someday.
Of course, the first state to go is California. An earthquake rips apart the state as Cusack and his family fly in a small jet with a man who’s never flown before. He may have never had flying lessons, but he’s the best pilot I’ve ever seen.Somehow he even manages to fly all the way to China, with an almost-safe landing.
Movie magic gives this film some pizzazz. With explosions, tsunamis and earthquakes, "2012" comes with some of the most amazing graphics; so amazing you would think it actually happened.
Good graphics or not, the storyline should be believable. Yes, this is based off of true historical findings, but some of the key elements in the movie are just far-fetched.
Flying out of a crack in the earth with a private jet without any flying experience, dodging skyscrapers as they fall to the ground and swimming underwater for 20 minutes is a little ridiculous. Cusack is no Michael Phelps, but he can sure hold is breath longer than him.
If only it was an Imax movie, then we could feel like we are actually there, experiencing the flight of a lifetime and surviving an eruption of a volcano.
Perhaps we will be able to experience it, though. Many believe that none of this end of the world stuff is true, and others believe it so much they are building Noah’s Ark-type ships.
This movie can scare people into thinking it will all actually happen, but that’s the fun part of movies. Feeling something that isn’t a part of reality.
The only way we can find out if this will be our reality is on December 22, 2012. And if we all live to see that day, well, at least we have this life-like movie to live in our own minds. We have been warned.
